That thing is a work of beauty. Now if only there was a way to combine that one with the fully rapid-fire automatic version. But I guess the lag would be game-crashing. Excellent idea to make it modular.
I took my first trip into the Nether today. Always on peaceful so I was fine for this trip. Constructed a shelter for the portal, and left a few player-dimension-tall holes in the walls in case I go in on easy/normal and some zombie pigmen wanna hide out the Ghasts with me. Got some Netherrack and Glowstone dust. Went topside, to my (dying) original cave and built a mob grinder around a skeleton spawner. Hunting squids is annoying - I can only see them from the surface (thanks to the Tiny render distance's fog wall) and then I have to dive into the pitch black and swing wildly. I think I now know why Notch gave them gaping red mouths full of sharp white teeth - so that we'd be able to see it and then get triggered to slash at it in panic (just me? anyone?).
I use far render distance, but my computer doesn't like it that much. Sometimes I switch to normal.
Also I'm reinforcing my base for coolness.
I use Normal distance because Far causes strange things to show up on the edges of multiplayer maps.

Two days' work on the new server. Ended up with the biggest and tallest piece of real estate on the entire server. I also have the most logs.
Spoiler!
I use Tiny render becauseit helps me spot figures far awaymy laptop doesn't do too well on Short, and Normal and Far are just out of the question.
Played a little (after some annoying hiccups) on the SMP server Fail suggested last night. The sheer amount of different stuff blew my mind. I love exploring, and I think I'll have fun exploring these places.
Does anyone find that passive mobs spawn less frequently? I used to always have my property and surroundings with a good number of livestock before, but now I can go a day or two without seeing more than 2 animals.
On another note, I find the game to be running smoother since I bought a real copy.
Currently using a custom Painterly pack.
- I made a first custom pack without giving it much thought
- Then I made a second custom pack while making thoughtful texture choices
- Then for the hell of it I made a third pack and made it as piratey as possible
Started playing the server again, it's pretty fun
