I visited the Arlington cemetery when I was in Washington, it's so depressing. So many soldiers have died fighting in the US military. I hate to think that one day my friend would die there since he is joining the US marine this September

How did he get talked into it? You need to talk him out, and fast.

Some recruiter called my phone and they were like "you should join the military because there are all these benefits (actually that's a lie, they're phasing those out to a large extent, as I've heard later from people who have joined up)."
Me: "I don't really believe in fighting."
Him: "You don't believe people should fight for our country's freedom? (strawman, taking my words out of context) 'Freedom isn't free', there's responsibility. Blah blah about just causes." (Basically, alot of stock arguments)
Me: "That's not really what I said. Also, freedom that comes at a cost isn't really freedom. Also, I think most of these "just causes" are excuses... Also, you're an idiot."
    Or something like that.

    Song of Peterdoken's Two Loves

    The(Don) prophets have spoken
    about an innocent young man
    moniker: Peterdoken.
    But they could not plan

    His conflicting desire.
    The tormenting pain wrought
    caused Peterdoken to tire.
For there were two he sought.

    One being Helen, lost love
lay buried in the depths of heart.
    Until tearing all of
    his dreams apart.

    But another would appear
    To taunt an innocent mind
Two "elegant eyes" into his soul did peer.
    Peter's fresh and romantic find?

    Innocent Peterdoken
    Sits debating, ever soft-spoken
    Helen or elegant eyes...
Hoping, one day, to claim his prize.

    Spoiler!

They fought for crap. The only fights for freedom were:

American Revolution (and the next 50 or so years after that, since the British actually took a fair amount of time to get used to the idea that one of their colonies wasn't a colony anymore), and various other countries' struggle for freedom. The Civil War? Nope. Most of the wars since? Mostly for either land, or "other people's freedom" (you can't "give" freedom (freedom at the debt of others, is a debt, not freedom), nor can you force people to be free, nor can you even tell people how to take freedom (they'll elect a despot)). The last war we've had was fighting to defend our country, not "fighting for our country's freedom." We defended it, fine, and then we went on fight country after country trying to "fight terror." (You can't fight fear either)

Attack of one's country should be swift, merciless, and brutal, not a drawn out war. Figure out the country responsible and bomb them to the ground. Oh, I'm sorry, there are peace accords from the UN... nope, a country that tries terrorist sabotage gets attacked. We don't need to fight a war, we just need one pilot and alot of bombs.

I stand corrected, even that wasn't for "freedom", except "freedom" to welch on a debt.

    RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE

Still, it makes an inspirational story.
