Most of my friends end up paying well over $500 for books/software licensing every semester.
Granted, most of my friends are in architecture, engineering, and chemistry
During my first semester last year I bought all of my books for $37 and sold them back at the end for $45.

Well it's self-explanatory that books get more expensive in the later college years, many of Canadians buy books the other students have used before. So cheaper than the original price.
Almost everyone buys used books when they can. It's not just a Canadian thing.
Book costs don't always get more expensive in the later years. As you work your way through your courses, you stop relying on textbooks and start relying more heavily on your instructor's lectures, your own research, and your first-hand experiences. This is why I included software licensing with that $500 example.

Engineering major here. Yes books are expensive but my software is free (legitly). If you order off Amazon you can get a new book for less than the price of a used one from your campus bookstore.
