Default Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops: The Calling

Ehe, it's not that I'm stopping AoM, I decided to try writing a fanfic based on... well, obvious from the title. Recently got addicted to it, despite the fact that I replayed it almost 3 times. But yeah, on with the story... I hope. I'll be alternating between updating AoM and this fic depending on inspiration, but since this fic will be based on a game (which I can play over and over again) whereas AoM is purely fictional, I'll probably be updating this more.

Disclaimer: I do not own neither Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops nor any of the characters in the actual game or anything else related to it, except for a copy of the PSP game. However, I do own a few characters which will appear in this fanfic, although they are purely fictional.

*Boo, I forgot how to write them disclaimers.*

    Prologue

The man only known by his codename, Naked Snake or Big Boss, turned his head around the corner of a steel crate in a patrol base. He could only see more crates arranged in a grid pattern around him, but he patiently waited. Soon after, a soldier in a brown uniform and a black ski mask turned the corner of a nearby crate on his usual patrol. He took a few moments to look around, then walked back.

Snake quickly ran up to the crate the guard had passed and waited there. The latter returned later, and when he turned his back, Snake sneaked up behind him and caught him in an armlock before he had a chance to sound the alarm. "Nighty-night." Snake tightened the armlock to block the passage of air to the lungs of his victim, suffocating him.

    ......

The truck's only other occupant, a certain Green Beret by the name of Roy Campbell, looked on as Snake dragged the unconscious guard to the back of their truck and hefted him up into the rear of the vehicle. "Didn't even see me coming," Snake mumbled, squatting down beside him.

"Yeah, yeah, your specialty is stealth ops anyway. I'll drive away so he can't scream his ass off alerting his buddies. Try not to wake him up, otherwise our 'friendly chat' might be ruined," Roy sighed, getting out of the truck and walking around to the driver's seat. His broken leg offered some resistance, but he put up with it. As he walked, he coughed, but Snake didn't hear it.

The truck's engine started up as Roy shifted the gear stick into reverse, moving the truck out of the compound and onto the deserted road. He turned off the road into a nearby bush, then got out and went to the back.

"You!" The guard gasped as Snake lifted him up by his shirt as he woke up. He quickly broke out of Snake's hold and tried to attack him, but his blow was blocked. "You heal up pretty quick," Snake remarked. His assailant abandoned the attack and went for Roy, pinning him down and taking his own M1911A1 pistol.

He barely had enough time to flick the safety off before the wizened stealth ops operative went at him with the speed and ferocity of a wild tiger. In a few seconds, the guard was on the floor of the truck, pinned by the neck. His gun clattered off to the side. "Quick thinker too. They trained you well, you're a good soldier."

"Who... who are you?" the guard said helplessly. "Call me Snake," Snake replied, keeping him pinned. The former didn't resist, knowing he was in the position of a prisoner and asked, "Snake? Is that a codename? You must be with the Americans. Are you with the FOX unit too?"

"I'm not with the Americans or with FOX. I'm just a soldier."

Anyone reading this who plays MGS Portable Ops, please do not spoiler the other readers on the plot. It'll remain unchanged, but I'll be adding other characters.

    Lame spoiler, everyone knows that.

    Chapter 1

Daily patrol routines were really boring, I mumbled aloud as I inspected a crate nearby. Being the sole female member of FOX did have its disadvantages. The sole female member of this division of FOX. It had been four months since Gene took control of the San Hieronymo Peninsula, a.k.a "la peninsula de la muertos", the peninsula of the dead.

The place was off the coast of central Columbia, and had previously been an old site for a Russian missile base originally planned to be used to launch nuclear-equipped Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles or IRBMs into the United States. The plan had been abandoned before the base was complete due to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, which was supposed to limit each country's number of ballistic missiles. Therefore, the base was scrapped.

Gene had simply taken over the chain of command of a bunch of Russian soldiers already on the peninsula, declaring that he would build a new nation, not of soldiers, but for them. And he had the means to do it, although I didn't know what. But there was... something in his voice that made me accept it. That was why I defected to the current FOX.

I was already regretting the decision. Although Gene brought supplies to the peninsula, the climate was a far cry from the US's. I couldn't remember how many times I caught a fever and had to go to the hospital; I had just been discharged from it to be honest. The XM177E2 carbine I was holding now was a little dusty, so I had polished it before going out on patrol wearing my usual FOX uniform, black camouflage clothing. I opted not to wear the beret and left the top two buttons of the uniform unbuttoned, it was hot enough already.

There were rumours flying around that two captured prisoners had escaped from the prison nearby, so we were all on alert status. "Aurora, any sight of the enemy?" my radio squawked. I picked it up and held it to my ear. "Negative, not even a hair," I sighed. "Roger that. Maintain alert status."

Aurora was just my codename, a unique one as there were very few female soldiers on the peninsula. I knew there was one going by Equinox, one of the officers on the west side. I turned the corner of a building and nearly tripped over a cardboard box lying in my way. "Those guys in the transport department should really watch where they put their precious cargo," I grumbled, walking on.

    "Freeze."

I gasped. How the hell... When? I raised my hands, trying not to look behind me. I didn't want to die just yet...... "Who.. who are you?" I asked. "Not important," the distinctively male voice replied. I felt a slight prick at the base of my neck, and the next thing I knew, I was lying on the ground with my eyes closing. I could see the face of a man bending down over me...... he was wearing an eyepatch and a bandana......

    ......

"You don't see many girls in FOX, let alone a babe like this!"

"Who're you calling a babe!?" I shot up and swung a punch at the closest guy. He easily blocked it, pinning me to the wall of... whatever I was in by my arms. "Whoa, hold it! Calling you a babe was meant as a compliment!" another guy nearby sighed. The one pinning me was wearing an eyepatch... he had knocked me out earlier! "I appreciate it, but I don't like being complimented by enemies."

"Enemies?" another guy walked in... what... He was wearing a black ski mask and a brown uniform... a LYNX? "Who are you people?" I asked, struggling to free myself. The eyepatched man held me tight. "We're a little resistance group on this peninsula, with the objective of freeing all the soldiers here from Gene's control," the one that had called me a babe replied.

"Freeing us... from Gene's control?" I ran the sentence through my head. If this was a prank, it was a good one. "Hey Snake, let me pin the girls we capture next time," he smiled. "You'd scare them away," the man holding me shot him down. "Snake...?" I blinked in surprise. The name sounded familiar... Hold on.

"You... I heard a few stories about a guy called Naked Snake when I was back in the FOX camp. Is it... you? Big Boss?" I gasped.
"Just Snake. He's Roy Campbell, you can think of him as our commanding officer of sorts. This one's Jonathan," Snake pointed at the other guy, then at the LYNX.
"The Shagohod... you were the one that destroyed it, weren't you?"
    "......"
"I see... I heard Snake used to be a FOX member. Why are you here?"
"Wouldn't one of Gene's soldiers know better?"
    "As a matter of fact, I don't."
    "Thought you might know more."
"I got some more questions of my own. We almost never get a chance to talk to Gene."
"Like... what kind of weapon he stole from the US?"
    "How'd you know?"
"Jonathan here didn't know about it either, until we told him. We procured documents from the patrol base nearby that detailed launch plans. We're still in the dark about what's going to be launched, but this base..."
"...was originally built by the Soviets as a missile base. IRBMs. Nukes. Of course......"
"We're trying to put a stop to Gene's plans."
"That much is obvious. And you want me to join you."
    "Exactly."

As if by magic, an invisible lock in my mind seemed to break. I found myself thinking about all sorts of things that would happen if Gene managed to launch a nuke... the base was in the perfect position for a missile strike at any American city. I found myself panicking, remembering my father and mother back in San Francisco. Why hadn't I thought of them before...? "I'm an idiot... Nukes should be banned for eternity... Why am I so stupid!?" I rested my head in my hands. Snake let go of my arms.

"I don't know how Gene does it... but he probably brainwashed you. Will you join us?" Roy extended a hand. I looked at it for a few moments, thinking. "But we're just 4. How will we take the rest of the soldiers on? I know there's at least four hundred people here..." I sighed. "In case you don't know, Snake's more into stealth. We're all relying on stealth to do this, and we might be recruiting more people as we go. As a FOX member, you shouldn't have a problem moving around. As long as you're in your... uniform, although it seems rather informal."

I looked down at my camouflage shirt. The top two buttons were still open, causing it to offer a view of my rather large cleavage... "Hey!" I quickly buttoned it up. "So, is it a yes or a no?" Jonathan asked. I hesitated for a second, and then nodded. The decision that could change my life...... This was it.

"By the way, can I have my gun back?" I asked Roy. "Snake confiscated it, ask him," he shrugged. I turned to look at Snake. He sighed, reluctantly reaching behind him and pulling out my XM177E2. "I like the silencer," he confessed. "I'll steal one for you when I see an unguarded one," I winked at him, checking the safety. It was on, as expected.

"All right, before we send you out on a mission, we'll have to check your capabilities," Roy clapped once, getting up. He coughed once, to Snake's stare at him. "You sure you're OK?" he asked. "Yes, yes, as long as I don't start again. Anyway, what did you train with?"

"Back in the camp, I took assault rifle courses. That's why I have this gun. My father taught me some karate as well, and I took a few aerobics lessons in my spare time. I'm good with a handgun too, but I can never seem to get the trajectory right on grenades," I said. "Funny that a girl like you decided to join the army."

"Runs in the family. My father and mother were soldiers too," I smiled, slinging the gun over my shoulder. "Well, what do we do now?" I looked at Snake. "We were actually trying to get some malaria ****s at the hospital, but we couldn't find any, Snake just found a document stating that the shipment was hauled off to a lab. Jonathan did have time to follow the helicopter we saw though, and he found the lab everything was shipped off to."

"So when do we go?" I smiled. "Now," Roy chuckled. I looked around, finally noticing that we were in the back of a truck. Probably one of the personnel carriers I had seen at the communications base. "By the way, did you touch anything while dragging me to the truck?" I demanded. "I'm no pervert," Snake shook his head.

Roy got out of the truck's back and climbed into the driver's seat with Jonathan beside him, leaving me with Snake in the back as the vehicle started moving. "Something wrong with Roy?" I whispered in his ear. "Malaria. He took preventative ****s, but they're ineffective. We might start showing the same symptoms soon if we don't find some of those ****s," he replied. I laid on my back on the cold steel of the truck's bed. "Have you ever stared at the moon for a long time?"

    "Nope."

    Chapter 2

I frowned as I clambered out of the truck, which had just backed into the compound of the research lab which was built on a platform several feet above the ground we were standing on. If anyone were watching, it'd be quite disadvantageous to us. Snake knew what he was doing though, he sneaked up to the wall nearby and put his back to it.

I had only been to the lab once, so I didn't know the layout of the place. What I did know, was that the malaria ****s had been shipped here, and even that was second-hand info. "What should I call you by?" Roy leaned out of the truck. "Aurora," I replied, checking to see if the standard-issue FOX combat knife was in my pocket or not. It was.

I shuddered at the thought that I would be pointing my gun at my ex-comrades, but I shook it away. They were under Gene's spell. We'd free as many as we could. The three of us ran for a few crates nearby, with Snake peeking around the corner. He nodded, so we ran to the next set of crates.

Just beyond them, beside more crates, was a LYNX guard with an AK47.

Snake ran out of cover for a second, flicked the safety off his handgun and fired a single shot. The guard collapsed a moment later. "Did you... kill him?" I blinked. "9mm tranquilizer bullets. Non-lethal," he showed me the gun. An MK22. With a silencer. "I see," I nodded as Jonathan ran out for the sleeping guard and dragged him in the direction of the truck. "We'll talk with him later. Let's find those ****s."

It was getting hot again, so I unbuttoned the top of my shirt, letting a slight breeze in. Jonathan returned a few moments later with some... cardboard boxes? I checked it, noting that the base was gone. "Hiding spots?" I raised an eyebrow curiously. "Yep."

So that was how Snake got me.

We spotted a scientist walking around outside the main building, but he was quickly neutralized by a bullet from Snake and dragged off by Jonathan. "Wait," Snake lifted a hand. He pointed at a ledge up above, on our left side. I could hear voices there...... he got up there quite fast, with me following behind. We put our backs to the wall at the open door there.

"What's his status?" A voice I recognized as Lt. Cunningham's asked.
"We're currently reinitializing his memory and readjusting his sensory nerves in the culture tank. By my estimate, it'll take...... Another twelve hours, at least." someone I didn't know replied.
Cunningham seemed to be annoyed when he said, "Half a day? He has to be readjusted after every deployment. Not much better than a prototype, a test subject."
"My apologies, sir. The culture fluid takes time to prepare. With such limited equipment and personnel, readjusting Null isn't-"

    Null?

    "I know. That's why I brought along a specialist."
    "The chief? But..."
"The escaped prisoners have yet to be found. This could be just the job for our Perfect Soldier. We'll roll out the tank as soon as the fluid's stabilized. Make all necessary preparations."
    "Yes, sir."

Snaked leaned in for a closer look, I did so too, taking care not to alert anyone. There were a lot of soldiers working on some scaffolding to build some kind of building...... I couldn't tell what it was, but I could see Gene and Cunningham together with... a blonde woman there.

"Commander." the woman looked at Gene.
"Yes, I know. Cunningham. Don't move."
    "Huh?"

I watched in horror as a part of the scaffolding broke off and came tumbling down to fall directly in front of Cunningham. He gasped and took a step back.

"Commander! Lieutenant! Are you all right?" a soldier shouted down, to which Gene replied, "Don't worry. Fate would never see me hurt. Now, lie still and try not to move. This man needs medical attention!"

His voice suddenly grew louder and started to resonate, even though there were no sound-reflecting walls...... "I apologize for any sense of urgency..."

"My head..." I clutched my head in pain. It was as if... the voice was resonating inside my head... forcing me to accept whatever was spoken... This was how he brainwashed people? It was so strong... I walked away from the open door, disgusted at what he was doing.

I almost bumped into Jonathan on my way down, and hurriedly apologized. "So, how did Snake talk you out of staying with Gene?" I asked the moment my headache went off. "He told me to... prove my loyalty. Not to justice, not to my country, but to myself. I thought I had been fighting for justice all this time, but he proved me wrong," he sighed, leaning against the wall. "I see......"

"Well, team. Campbell thinks that the ****s and the medical supplies could be in the same room as the culture tank. I'll go and find it, you two head back to the truck," Snake came down later. I nodded and walked off. Had to envy him sometimes.

"Hmm?" a foreign voice came from somewhere nearby. I turned around to see a LYNX patrolling nearby. "What's FOX doing here?" he walked over to check us out. "Official business. I have a letter to deliver," I quickly came up with an answer, as Jonathan nodded at me and walked off, only to sneak back behind him later. "You don't have to come and deliver it yourself, just ask someone else to-" he was promptly caught in a chokehold and suffocated into dreamland.

I smiled, walking over as Jonathan dropped the unconscious LYNX on the ground. I bent down and rummaged through his pockets, lifting out a canister from a pocket. "Don't see many chaff grenades around," I remarked, pocketing it. The guy had been holding an M16A1 assault rifle, I took a little ammo from him too. The XM177E2 used the same ammunition as the M16A1. "I'm a little tired, think you can help drag him back to the truck?" Jonathan asked. I nodded.

Initially, I didn't realize the implications of dragging him, until I pointed out that I had never done this sort of thing before. Jonathan showed me how, since he was an ex-rescuer, but I didn't like the way he did it. He lifted the guy up by his arms and pulled him backwards with his arms around the captive's chest, holding him to his own. "But..." I stared at the way he dragged the guy.

I couldn't drag him by the legs either, I couldn't bear seeing his... never mind. I ended up dragging him back to the truck the way Jonathan had showed me, with his dead weight pressing against my chest the whole time. Once I finished hefting him down two ramps and a long corridor, I collapsed beside the truck, panting. "I'll need to give you some rescuer lessons," Jonathan frowned as he lifted the guy up onto the truck's bed. He climbed in later and tied him up to stop him from escaping. "Not. On. My. Life."

I climbed into the truck's bed after I caught my breath and began examining the guard we had captured first. I wasn't a big fan of the AK-47, so I left it in a corner and checked his pockets, digging up a small box of rations and keys. No idea what the keys opened though. "The food here sucks," I sighed. "Agreed. Maybe we should raid the hospital's pantry sometime," Jonathan chuckled.

"Sure, once we find the time and energy. I'm tired," I yawned, lying down on the truckbed. Jonathan was sitting near the front of the truckbed, and was now looking at me. "I barely passed the stamina test. It was hell," I sighed. He was still looking at me. At that moment, I realized what he was looking at. "Look, it's freaking hot in this place! Can't I get some air?" I groaned in exasperation and changed my position so my head was facing the back of the truck.

"Sometimes I wonder why girls are into this kind of stuff," Jonathan sighed, sitting down. "You wouldn't believe the number of girls I've seen in the army," Snake popped out of nowhere, holding a small box. "Got the ****s AND a little story to tell."

Overall, I like this story. Gene is such an "evil mastermind."

I thought the transition between Aurora bumping into Jonathan and then asking how he was talked out of staying with Gene was a bit rushed. Had Aurora recovered from her headache by the time she reached Johnathan?
I feel so acknowledged now that I've seen 17 people quote me in their sig. And 4 unfortunately.

    Hot girl here:
