Chapter finished. Took forever, huh?
Chapter 12
"Think we got any closer to your parents?"
"I don't know. If only we had some sort of clue..."
The sun was going down again, and everything they had met were grassy plains and a few villages here and there. Once, they had stopped to get drink and food in one of those villages, but nothing special had happened that day. It was getting warmer and Zack felt his cold slowly disappearing. They hadn't talked much, Zack didn't want to disturb her and just wanted her to recover from what had happened that morning.
"So, all in all, there's not really a city we can visit in Namidia if you'll want to come with me, except Lunata, which is already at the border and can't be really seen as a desert city. I could show you the never ending sandstorm in the center." Zack explained as they talked about Zack's home.
A bird caught Zack's eye. It was brown, with white stripes, and it was quite big, but it wasn't as big as a hawk or an eagle. It sat on a tree branch and eyed Zack and Laura nervously.
Did he remember it from anywhere...? The shape of the colors reminded him of something, but what was it? He tried to go back to the past in his head, to the moment where he had seen the feather, but he couldn't recreate any environment next to it... except the sky. And something brown under it... but what was that?
He turned his head to Laura, intending to ask her whether she knew that bird, but then he instantly was reminded of where he knew it from.
The feather in Laura's hair. It was exactly the color of the bird.
"Laura, have you got that feather in your hair for long?" Zack asked.
"Why? Do they rot or anything?" she replied, taking it out of her hair and holding it as far away as possible from her body.
"No, but I think that bird or one of its buddies gave you the feather."
The bird, whatever kind of bird it was, cocked its head and flew away.
"Come on, chase it!" Zack yelled, spreading his arms as he started running after it. Laura followed closely behind him.
It flew over the plains, turning to the south, there, it flew towards a forest. Zack followed it, not thinking about where it was flying, just ran behind it until it entered the woods, and then Zack stopped since he noticed that Laura was way behind him already.
She arrived panting.
"How can you run so fast...?"
"Laura, it isn't supposed to be autumn yet?"
"Huh?"
Laura looked up and saw that none of those trees had leaves. The leaves were rotten and lying on the ground. "I guess this is what you heard yesterday... but why?" Zack muttered, not being able to understand what had happened. There must have been a reason.
"I remember those woods... I remember them... I think we lived in a village in them..."
"Let's get going." Zack offered, taking a step into the woods. The leaves under his feet were rustling as he slowly disappeared behind the trees, Laura following him. Something wasn't quite right about this place.
"Laura, can you hear anything besides our steps and the wind?"
Laura held on for a moment to search the surroundings.
"There's still my fishy feeling. Flaris is full of magic, and I don't like magic. Besides, I didn't have my daily near-death experience yet."
Soon, they arrived at a few forgotten houses, three or four. One of them was burned down, the others seemed to have suffered from storms. Not a single soul lived there...
"I guess... this is it. The place you grew up at."
"I was hoping to find another relative... but this place is dead."
Leaves rustled though none of them had moved and Zack whirled around to see a woman with a covered face in a brown cloak. She was emitting a faint, green glow.
"You stole our protection and our life, human. What have you come back for? Have you not left enough destruction?" the cloaked person asked.
