I just started TF2 and I suck. I get my ass handed to me constantly.

What class?
Mostly just scout and spy.
For scout find a wall to jump behind when people notice you. Running to the open can often kill you. Remember that when your shotgun ammo runs out that the bat is your friend. You can take down medics with your bat in a few seconds before the person he is healing can help.
With spy make sure you are aware of who you are disguised as and at the first sign of them maybe being aware you are a spy cloak and get the balls out of there.

Keep moving in an erratic pattern. The scattergun is meant for close ranged combat, combined with his low HP the scout is a hit and run / flanking class.
