Actually, with Elemental Reset, Gear can hit anything.

Actually, with elemental reset, you still can't gear or damage (hit more than 1) things that are immune to fire. Go try on fire tusks or second stage firebrands. Doesn't work.

You don't need elemental reset at all when you gear. Gear already works on anything except fire immune and bosses. Elemental reset basically does nothing to help gear. You can go around burning red kentaurus and red dragon turtles without the use of elemental reset.
On another note, people have mentioned using slow to make gear more effective. Slow doesn't help you use gear, I'd say slow is probably detrimental to the use of fire gear. Monsters have to walk through the Fire Gears to be set on fire (poisoned), not stay inside of it.

when they are slowed and they stay longer within the gears, the chances of being inflicted with it increases if it hasn't already been geared/burned (since it's 70% at max level).

That % chance really has no effect on training. How often do you see a monster pass by gears or mist without ending up poisoned?

At the least, 30% of the time.

gear, move left/right, gear, rinse repeat until map is filled up.

wait 40 seconds, proceed to killing, restart from beginning.

unless, gear training is different from mist training. so far, i've only heard that gear can't overlap other gears.

yeah mists can over lap mists, but with flame gear, you have like a 2 second wait time after you cast it. I got knocked around by Cold eyes in my late 30's, early 40's because I thought that it was like poison mist, and I thought I could keep spammimg it, but that is not the case.
