Since it's in alpha and Notch quit his old job to exclusively work on this (and presumably eat and sleep), this game updates several times a week, with the additional secret Friday updates. He has announced that eventually/soon paypal will not be the only way to pay.

Strategy guide:
Use a cooler looking skin, you sissy.
punch a tree for a few blocks of wood.
turn your wood into planks.
make a couple sticks, a workbench, and wooden ax.
completely use the axe on trees.
make all your wood into planks.
make a couple wooden pickaxes.
turn the rest of your planks into sticks.
use your pickaxes on stone, make a few stone pickaxes.
look for, mine a bunch of coal.
Make at least two slots of torches
look for a cute spot on the map.
Make a house out of probably dirt or stone.
find cave, spelunk for a few hours until you have 278914617 pieces of iron.
Get sick of - AMBIENT CAVE NOISE HOLY ****
Get sick of spelunking.
Realize how friggin deep you are, struggle in vain to get back home.
Get back home.
Repeat.

Notes:
Play on peaceful mode because you're a wimp like me.
KILL ALL FLOWING WATER AT ITS SOURCE... inside caves. Outside they're fine.
MAKE A TRAIL OF TORCHES
Avoid touching lava/magma/azn4anime like the plague.
