I think there's 48 confirmed deaths, but that was at 12:30pm... I hope it resides. The financial side of it will be awful, multi million pounds worth of damage =< My Australian and Japanese friends are all ok though, so that's slightly less worry for me.

Part of City Building 101. Build near resources, so you don't run out during shortages. Also ports = foreign trade (even with planes now, you still have a limit it can carry and still take off). Also, ideally you should have mountains nearby for defense from troops, and for farming on the valleys of.

I tried to make sense of that post, and it made sense, but how does that relate exactly towards what he asked I guess is what was missing from that post.

I'd say the most basic thing is having strict codes that protect against any (natural) disasters your area will face. For example you don't need earthquake resistance in Miami, but you sure as hell need hurricane resistance. Our building codes are lax as ****.
