You still didn't explain what Rhetorical [Skill] is.
Someone with rhetorical skills can easily turn ~C knowledge into an A paper. I always looked at essays as ways to practice that, especially when the teacher was strict.
Obviously you're not going to get anywhere by BSing based solely on common knowledge (unless you're in a very low level course), but you can "trick" the teacher into believing you're well-studied.
Eventually you'll realize that you're no longer "bsing", at least if you continue on past intro-level writing courses. Anyone can memorize grammar rules and random facts, but it takes a huge amount of practice and effort to really understand how to appeal to people. There is never a single meaning behind any written or spoken word. Language is incorporated into every aspect of culture and is a major indicator of cultural shifts. Understanding how certain words and phrases affect people is key to persuasion. If you can grasp multiple meanings, you can begin persuading.
