Peter no offense, but the essay has potential, but you need to elaborate more, not because god knows how many times I've read Gatsby, but just the structure is relatively weak.

And peter, do not use contractions and INGs at the end of a word. This is something you must follow ;)
Like I said, that's just a very general rule teachers give instead of actually explaining how to write

And that was my point. We learn not to use them like in 7th grade.
Personally, I found the Great Gatsby pretty overrated. That, and Gone With The Wind. There's not much I hate worse than commentaries on totally decadent people made into something "profound." Plus, the writing was hackneyed, and he made up dumb words like orgastic (it's orgasmic, or orgiastic).
Next paper, tell your teacher he's a pompous twit for liking a hack like Fitzgerald, especially to the point of failing everyone over it, and transfer classes.
No, I mean that rule becomes outdated within more advanced writing.
Once again, as much as I also dislike Fitzgerald, he was far from a "hack". At this point I think you just criticize things because they're popular. You can't even try to deny that it reflected (and manipulated) many ideas of the time. Rather or not he was a positive influence on the people is another story, but you can't discount his influence. The cliche goes, "know your enemy." Important topics should definitely be recognized within school, even if you *incorrectly* disagree with them.
