MLA is not a format of text. It has nothing to do with it. It is the method of citation and organization of the paper/essay. There is also APA and Chicago. It depends on the specific course as to which style you should be using (e.g. MLA for English assignments).

MLA style does actually entail text formatting, including generally accepted font sizes. If the instructor only says "MLA citation", all that matters is how you cite the sources. If they expect the paper to be written in MLA style format, there is a relatively specific way to do so (and a regularly updated handbook).

We associate it solely with the citation aspect because that's generally what's expected. However, the MLA has a specific way of writing any "research" paper, and that goes beyond basic citation.

Purdue usually keeps it all updated and free, and is definitely one of the most reliable (free) sources for format guides.
