The huge problem with online gaming is the lack of security measures on private information, Look at the recent hack that sony had to suffer where thousands of credit card numbers were taken.
I'm writing a report on improving online gaming. So far I've got preventing people from quitting a game in the middle of it, online champions for sports games, cross-game chat for the PS3 similar to the one on the Xbox360 and a feature to be able to replay and save moments from an online game. Is there anything else you can think of to help me with this because I'm drawing blanks at the moment.

How to improve online gaming:
PC only.
Butts.

That's actually impossible unless the ratio of game moderators to players is relatively low. Once you get past about 1:1000 or so it starts to get out of control, and a lot of online gaming is going to be significantly higher than that. Also in FPS or "room" styled games, it's pretty much impossible unless the report function is working and a moderator is actually going to look at it. Again, this is incredibly difficult to do without a huge amount of overstaffing, and when recruiting said staff there's no guarantee they won't become corrupted either (ie, giving friends advantages, neglecting duties, doing things that can harm the game, etc).

Left 4 Dead community: too many trolls and people with huge egos. Near impossible for newer people to get into the game due to most of the oldies trash talking while destroying them in a scrim. Moderation in this game isn't an issue since it's 4v4 but the community is too unforgiving. Not only is the new team having a bad time getting destroyed if one of them is mad and stops caring your team is only as good as your worst player in most cases.
I only speak for l4d because it's what I know but the issue in online gaming is the people themselves. If people would adjust their attitude things would be more fun for everyone.
While the gameplay of versus is generally not fun for me, the added horribleness of people who play versus makes it even worse.

When people play games with other people they don't know, they become really huge douchebags. It's an illusion of grandeur, be it from 6 headshots in a row or from 1 billion mesos.
It seems like everyone has more of a problem with the human race given the magic of anonymity, rather than actual game flaws.
