    The standard of a "good" piece of equipment has risen dramatically.

    There's also this thing called potential. "good" equipment has brilliant potential, nowadays. They've also massively increased item drop rate and you can craft items nowadays, so you'd be able to find most stuff pretty cheap, items without pot are usually sold to NPCs, anyway.

    so how do i make a bandit exactly lol, i've already made 2 characters because i was confused with this new system. first i clicked on explorer, then i clicked on dual blade, which is it exactly?

    You'll need an explorer, they're the normal class you're used to playing(You do maple island etc, become thief at 10 etc)

    I'd recommend playing in Bellocan. Most of the HS community plays there, if at all, and the rest are scattered around most other worlds. You'll probably need to ask quite a lot of questions once you start again. Take some time, get used to the current Maple.
