Oh wow, this looks so much smoother than the old site.
That "filter item by type" after a search is going to be so helpful.
Also having the forum link so prominently displayed right next to the "Database" link is awesome.
Hey guys!
We know we've been quiet recently with nary an update, but we've mostly been working in the background to work on a revamp of Hidden Street from scratch, which has been on our minds for the greater part of last year. Instead of expending our energies updating both current and new databases, we've decided that the only logical recourse is to fully concentrate on the new database(s) instead.
Though the new database is yet to be fully completed—we still have a lot of work cut out for us—we're releasing an alpha version of the database with some sections enabled so that you guys will be able to enjoy the fruits of our labour now, as well as report to us any possible bugs that you may encounter. If some pages are empty or lead you to the wrong page, let us know!
Check it out at http://www.hidden-street.net. Click on Browse Database, and our menu of items will appear. Right now, you may access a full listing of items only for:
- Class
- Items
- Equipment
- Monsters
For other sections such as Maps, Quests, NPCs, etc, we've yet to complete their main pages, but if you know their names, you should be able to search for them in the database and they should turn up. (Again, if they don't, report it to us here in this thread or contact us privately.) For these other pages, feel free to refer to our old databases at http://global.hidden-street.net or http://sea.hidden-street.net.
Unfortunately, we would not be able to carry forward user data from our old databases, which means we'll have to start from scratch. As user accounts have minimal functions at the moment, we'll only re-enable them in the future.
At the time being, the new database covers only MapleGlobal and patch 1.17 at the time of writing, but rest assured we're working on MapleSEA as well! We've not abandoned you guys. We're also working on a mobile theme for smartphones, which is on our road map as well. In short:
Roadmap
- Finishing other sections in the new Global database
- MapleSEA
- Mobile theme
- Hidden Street's revamped guild site
Current Database Moderators do not have access yet to edit the database, but that is something we're working towards in the coming weeks.
Have fun guys! Play with it. Explore. And let us know your thoughts.

Spoiler!
Epic? hardly. You overemphasize Search. Search is your weakest feature. It causes the most errors and is the least useful. Changing the more useful Browse feature into a popover window is just plain bad design.
Its cute that you have to be elitist over everything.

Personal issue, but I'm having a hard time accepting the loading extra thing when you're on the mob/items/equips pages. I find it annoying to scroll all the way down the page, then have it take a second before loading some more mobs/items/equips everytime.
Also saw no elitism in Thorr's original post.

Were you referring to our old Search feature? It was indeed pretty weak in the old version, but we've made it much more dynamic in the new version. We'll re-think how else we can redesign the main page.
Unfortunately this is something we had to implement to prevent extreme slowdowns with the site. I talked it over with Jon, we'll increase the limit of items appearing on the page and see how it goes.
Keep 'em coming guys, this is after all, still in its infancy, and we're sure we have plenty of things we can improve on.
Your search previously would force auto-completions. It would choke if you misspelled anything along the way. You had to get the garbage out of the way if you wanted to find something NOT on the dropdown list. Your search also only covered item names and not content. As searches go, it's just not that good. From what I can see, the search seems to look in more than just titles, now, and that is a good thing. Let's hope the number of script errors goes significantly down, too.
Your popover category list is really an unnecessary step. If the user hits the Browse function, it should go straight to the main db page.
See, by having the front page as it is, you have no indication of purpose. The only thing on that page that indicates that it is a Maplestory search is the Slime in the logo. Otherwise, it just looks like a Google clone. You need more there, perhaps below the search input, to indicate that this is a one-stop shop for Maplestory information. Currently there are databases out there that do it far better than HS does and you must compete with them. The serious player won't come here first. Instead of fighting that, embrace it and work with the audience you have. Your new interface is cutesy and all, but you still need to show why it's there. The ease of the front-end will go a long way with the demographic in which you currently excel (the younger audience). So now that you have simplified it, dress it up a little with a slogan of purpose/intent. This page is the FIRST thing people see when they come to this domain. It should thus be clear what is happening here. "The Database takes flight" means nothing. Keep it around for sentiment, but find a better way tell everyone this is a maplestory information center.
